Gate recommendations please

I like to leave our bathroom door open, but my babe is starting to enter without me or hub. At 15months, she's starting to touch things....

Do you think I should get a gate? If so, which one do you recommend?

We have North States superyard play yard, but that was short lived. I ended up spending more time in there than my babe. LOL

Re: Gate recommendations please

  • I'd suggest something temporary that pushes against the sides of the doorframe. Just make sure to measure the doorframe. We ended up with a gate that was too wide on the smallest setting and had to get a smaller one.

  • Just close the door.  That's what we do.  However, if she's able to open the door, then you need to put child proof guards on the knob.  Most of our knobs are the old style, so he hasn't figured them out yet.  He figured out the lever ones (and the deadbolts) a long time ago.  You probably should also child proof your bathroom, or at least the part that has medicines and chemicals.

As for gates, the compression ones don't work for us.  We have ones that can be screwed in or compression mounted.  DS took the compression mount down with one try when he was about a year old.  Granted, he's pretty strong.  So, our gates are screwed in.  Actually, the tops are screwed in and the bottoms are typically compression mounted as we didn't want to put screws through the molding.  That's enough to hold them firmly.

We use pet gates as they're taller and wider.  We have very wide doorways, so we couldn't find baby gates that had enough extenders.  Plus, I have a very tall kid, so the tallest baby gates are too short.  Plus, the pet ones are designed to hold in large dogs.  I've been grateful for that design strength when he decides to rock the Casbah and shake it for all it's worth.  Or ram things into it.  Or plan his great escape and try to climb it.  I've also been grateful that we screwed them into the wall when he does that.

  • We just keep the door closed. We only use a gate where is no door...like one the stairs.
